On arrival at the Jorhat airport, we are met at the receiving area and with packed lunch drive to Neamati Ghat to board the M.V. Mahabaahu. We check into our cabins and immediately gather in the restaurant for the essential safety briefing and to experience the first sail. We proceed into the evening with a talk on Majuli, the seat of Vaishnavism in Assam. Soon M.V. Mahabaahu drops anchor and the evening follows into a ‘Kamrup Swaagat Bhoj’ or welcome dinner. We start the day with Yoga and enjoy an early breakfast as we sail towards Majuli island, which is one of the largest river island systems of the world. Majuli which literally means land between two rivers, is a cosmos of Assamese culture where various philosophies co-exist and thrive; ancient monasteries dedicated to preservation and development of culture and art have existed here since the 15th Century. After breakfast we take a short boat ride to the mainland where a drive takes us to a scenic corner of ‘Garamur Satra’ for an interesting cultural performance by Satriya singers and dancers. We move to ‘Kamlabari Satra’ to witness another performance by the Vaishnavite priests in the temple premise. We walk through the humble dwellings of the monks and talk about their daily chores and this is an insight into their chosen path. We drive back to the shore for our short boat ride back to M.V. Mahabaahu. We sail for about 45 minutes towards mainland and transfer to Harucharai Tea Estate for a traditional Assamese lunch with the Tea-estate family. After lunch, we have a talk by the professionals on the different types of tea and especially the ones produced in Assam which is followed by tea-tasting session. Return back to M.V Mahabaahu and this evening enjoy a relaxed, quiet walk on the island or a game of cricket/volley ball. Overnight onboard M.V.Mahabaahu.
We start the day with Yoga on the Donyi Polo deck for the very early birds and enjoy an early breakfast and sail towards Neamati Ghat. We embark on a day-excursion to Sibsagar, the ancient city of the Ahom Kings; a town that literally means 'the ocean of Lord Shiva’. We visit the Talatal or Karen Ghar which was the palace of the Ahom Kings and after a leisurely stroll in and around the monument we go on to Rang Ghar which was a place for entertainment for the Royals and their guests.We proceed to the Sibsagar town where on its banks are located some of the famous temples of Sibsagar. The Shiva Dol, constructed in the year 1734 is believed to be the highest Shiva temple in India. We drive back to MV Mahabaahu to enjoy a late lunch as we sail out to a deserted island. Yoga enthusiasts enjoy an early morning Yogic walk and a Yoga session and MV Mahabaahu sails towards a Mishing Village. Generally the Mishings live on the bank of river. They live in 'Chang ghar', a house with raised platform. Almost all Mishing women are expert weavers. After climbing up the house platform and exploring Mishing homes, purchasing some of their weaves/fresh vegetables and more, we return to the comfort of MV Mahabaahu for lunch and sail. A boat safari after lunch at the Eastern Range of the Kaziranga National Park at the point where the two waters of Dhansiri River and the Brahmaputra river meet. We return to MV Mahabaahu and enjoy a cooking demonstration by the Chef and bite into freshly cooked Indian snacks with Assam Tea or coffee. This evening, we enjoy a leisurely dinner followed by a talk on ‘The River Brahmaputra and the life that exists alongside’. Overnight onboard M.V.Mahabaahu.
As we indulge in some Yog sadhana, MV Mahabaahu sails towards Bishwanath Ghat also called "Gupta Kashi After breakfast followed by a talk on Kaziranga and wild life in India and a short orientation on Bishwanath Ghat, we visit an ancient temple in reverence of Lord Shiva and watch the women display the weaves. We sail on for the next couple of hours and enjoy lunch and then towards late afternoon we take a short drive to a tea estate. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the tea estate watching the tribal women picking tea leaves. Here, we stop for a talk with the Manager of the tea estate who familiarises us with the essentials of running a tea-estate. We proceed to the tea factory to see the process of finally producing Assam Tea and coming to terms with ‘all that goes into preparing a cup-of-tea. By sunset, we are ready to drive back to MV Mahabaahu to enjoy a cultural evening with cocktails followed by dinner and retire early for the next morning elephant safari. We rise very early and after a warm cup of tea, we drive out before sunrise towards the Kaziranga National Park. The most prized inhabitant of Kaziranga is the Greater One-Horned Indian Rhinoceros, but the Park is home to as many as 180 different mammals including wild elephants, tiger, deer, Asiatic wild buffalo and a rich variety of birds. We reach the Kohora Mihimukh and start our morning adventure; once-in-a-lifetime elephant-backed safari where we search for the elusive rhinoceros, tigers, swamp deer and hog deer and more. After breakfast at a resort in Kaziranga, we drive on to Bagori, the Western Range of Kaziranga and get into the open jeeps for some more wild life adventure. We return to MV Mahabaahu for lunch and a relaxed afternoon while our vessel brings us closer to our destination. Dinner at the Soma Lounge. Overnight onboard M.V.Mahabaahu.
MV Mahabaahu today heads on for a full day sail, passing by inhabited islands that may or may not survive the flood season We enjoy a talk on ‘Kamakhya and the occult in Assam’. As we sail on scanning the river for a fleeting sight of the Gangetic Dolphins or do some bird watching from the deck. Today, we anchor early at a deserted island and can take a stroll on the island for a while and then move on to a formal Assamese evening with cocktails and the ‘Alvida Bhoj’ or Farewell Dinner where a toast is once again raised but to Devi Kamakhya for the journey safely completed and the one ahead. Overnight onboard M.V.Mahabaahu.
Yoga for those of us who may create time. Luggage outside the door before breakfast and enjoy a relaxed breakfast We bid adieu and move towards Kamakhya Temple. This Temple is devoted to the eternal feminine; the goddess of desire whose name is Kama Khya, granter of desires. Later, we are transferred to the airport with packed lunch for our onward destination.
